Chronotype ontogeny related to gender BJMBR
Duarte,L.L.; Menna-Barreto,L.; Miguel,M.A.L.; Louzada,F.; Araújo,J.; Alam,M.; Areas,R.; Pedrazzoli,M..
Chronotype is an established concept designed to identify distinct phase relationships between the expression of circadian rhythms and external synchronizers in humans. Although it has been widely accepted that chronotype is subjected to ontogenetic modulation, there is no consensus on the interaction between age and gender. This study aimed to determine the relationship between age- and gender-related changes in the morningness-eveningness character in a large sample of people. A total of 14,650 volunteers were asked to complete the Brazilian version of the Horne and Östberg chronotype questionnaire. The data demonstrated that, on average, women were more morning-oriented than men until the age of 30 and there were no significant differences between men...

Circadian chronotypes among wild-captured west Andean octodontids Biol. Res.
OCAMPO-GARCÉS,ADRIÁN; MENA,WILSON; HERNÁNDEZ,FELIPE; CORTÉS,NELSON; PALACIOS,ADRIÁN G.
Rest activity pattern was studied in wild-captured males of Octodon degus (n=9), Octodon bridgesi (n=3), and Spalacopus cyanus (n=6) (Rodentia: Octodontidae). Ten-minute resolution actograms were constructed from data obtained by an automated acquisition system. After two months of habituation to a stable light-dark schedule, recordings were performed in isolation chambers under a 12: 12 Light Dark schedule. A free-running period (constant darkness) was recorded for O. bridgesi and S. cyanus. O. degus displayed a crepuscular pattern of rest activity rhythm. Entrained O. bridgesi and S. cyanus displayed nocturnal preference, with rest anticipating light phase and without crepuscular activity bouts. Under constant darkness, active phase occurred at...

Circadian G2 arrest as related to circadian gating of cell population growth in Euglena OAK
Bolige, Aoen; Hagiwara, Shin-ya; Zhang, Yulan; Goto, Ken; 後藤, 健.
Cell population growth is gated to occur in particular circadian phases, which has been known for over four decades in various organisms including cyanobacteria and human. However, little is known as to which cell cycle phases from G(1) to M are primarily regulated by the circadian rhythm or when in a circadian cycle this primary regulation takes place. We report here that in the flagellate alga Euglena gracilis grown photoautotrophically, the circadian rhythm primarily prevented developmentally matured G(2) cells from progressing to mitosis, such that cell population growth occurred only during subjective night. In addition, we found that the circadian rhythm also arrests G(1)-to-S and S-to-G(2) transitions at particular circadian phases.

Circadian pattern of Bothrops moojeni in captivity (Serpentes: Viperidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Stuginski,DR; Sant'Anna,SS; Fernandes,W; Abe,AS.
Members of the subfamily Crotalinae are considered to be essentially nocturnal and most of the data about these snakes have been collected from the field. Information on how nutritional status affects the movement rate and activity patterns is a key point to elucidating the ecophysiology of snakes. In this study, we distributed 28 lancehead Bothrops moojeni into three groups under distinct feeding regimens after a month of fasting. Groups were divided as follows: ingestion of meals weighing (A) 40%, (B) 20%, or (C) 10% of the snake body mass. Groups were monitored for five days before and after food intake and the activity periods and movement rates were recorded. Our results show that B. moojeni is prevalently nocturnal, and the activity peak occurs in...

Circadian rhythms of resistance to UV-C and UV-B radiation in Euglena as related to 'escape from light' and 'resistance to light' OAK
Bolige, Aoen; Kiyota, Maki; Goto, Ken; 後藤, 健.
Radiation-induced stress, either from visible or UV light, is strongest at midday. We found that, in the absence of stress or time cues, Euglena gracilis Z was the most resistant to UV-C and UV-B at subjective midday, whether judged from immediate or reproductive survival. The circadian UV-resistance rhythms were free-running in stationary cultures under 1-h light/1-h dark cycles or continuous darkness, indicating that cell-cycle dependent DNA susceptibility to UV was not involved. We moreover examined what was the primary cause of the circadian U-V resistance, estimated as the immediate cell survival. The half-maximal lethal dose (LD50) of UV-C at subjective midday (the most resistant phase) was 156 J/m(2), which is similar to 3-fold that at subjective...

Do Caucasian and Asian clocks tick differently? BJMBR
Barbosa,A.A.; Pedrazzoli,M.; Koike,B.D.V.; Tufik,S..
The Period 3 and Clock genes are important components of the mammalian molecular circadian system. Studies have shown association between polymorphisms in these clock genes and circadian phenotypes in different populations. Nevertheless, differences in the pattern of allele frequency and genotyping distribution are systematically observed in studies with different ethnic groups. To investigate and compare the pattern of distribution in a sample of Asian and Caucasian populations living in Brazil, we evaluated two well-studied polymorphisms in the clock genes: a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) in PER3 and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in CLOCK. The aim of this investigation was to search for clues about human evolutionary processes related...

Effect of the time-of-day of training on explicit memory BJMBR
Barbosa,F.F.; Albuquerque,F.S..
Studies have shown a time-of-day of training effect on long-term explicit memory with a greater effect being shown in the afternoon than in the morning. However, these studies did not control the chronotype variable. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess if the time-of-day effect on explicit memory would continue if this variable were controlled, in addition to identifying the occurrence of a possible synchronic effect. A total of 68 undergraduates were classified as morning, intermediate, or afternoon types. The subjects listened to a list of 10 words during the training phase and immediately performed a recognition task, a procedure which they repeated twice. One week later, they underwent an unannounced recognition test. The target list and...

Evolution of circadian organization in vertebrates BJMBR
Circadian organization means the way in which the entire circadian system above the cellular level is put together physically and the principles and rules that determine the interactions among its component parts which produce overt rhythms of physiology and behavior. Understanding this organization and its evolution is of practical importance as well as of basic interest. The first major problem that we face is the difficulty of making sense of the apparently great diversity that we observe in circadian organization of diverse vertebrates. Some of this diversity falls neatly into place along phylogenetic lines leading to firm generalizations: i) in all vertebrates there is a "circadian axis" consisting of the retinas, the pineal gland and the...

Phytochrome-like responses in Euglena: a low fluence response that reorganizes the spectral dependence of the high irradiance response in long-day photoperiodic induction of cell division OAK
Bolige, Aoen; Goto, Ken.
Irradiance spectra change spatiotemporally, and angiosperms adapt accordingly, mainly through phytochromes. This study challenges the long-held belief that the flagellated alga Euglena gracilis lacks phytochromes and is therefore unaffected by spectral changes. We photoautotrophically cultured the alga under continuous light (LL), then transferred it to darkness. After about 26 h in darkness, different irradiations for 3 h enabled cell division in dark-arrested G2 cells evoking a high-irradiance response (HIR). The spectral characteristics of the irradiation during the LL period (pre-irradiation) defined the spectral sensitivity in the subsequent dark period. LL with light rich in the red spectrum led to a HIR to the red spectrum (R-HIR), whereas light...

Quelques aspects de la regulation du systeme neuroendocrine produisant la CHH et de la relation entre le rythme circadien et la glycemie ArchiMer
Kallen, J.
In crayfish, the hemolymph glucose level shows an endogenous circadian rhythmicity which is expressed by a nocturnal glucose rise. This study shows that injections of serotonin and dopamine result in hyperglycemia and that injections of met-enkephalin decrease hemolymph glucose level as well as the nocturnal circadian glucose peak. Using immunocytochemistry, these neurotransmitters have been located in the eyestalk and their relationship with the CHH cell system is described.

Sequential feeding with diets varying in amino acid content for growing-finishing pigs Scientia Agricola
Silva,Welex Cândido da; Campos,Paulo Henrique Reis Furtado; Santos,Luan Sousa dos; Veira,Alini Mari; Fraga,Alícia Zem; Hauschild,Luciano.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of daily phase feeding (DP) and sequential feeding (SEQ) on the feeding behavior, performance, and body composition of growing-finishing pigs. Sixty barrows at 29.7 ± 2.8 kg body weight (BW) were assigned to one of four treatments: DP with a blended proportion of feeds A (high nutrient density) and B (low nutrient density) was adjusted to match 100 % of daily amino acid (AA) diet recommendations (DP100); a negative treatment, which matched 70 % of daily AA diet recommendations (DP70); and two SEQ with a blend of feeds A and B, adjusted twice a day (at 00h00 and 12h00), to match 70 or 110 % of daily AA diet recommendations during two 12 h intervals: SEQ110-70 and SEQ70-110. DP70 and SEQ showed a lower feed...

The interaction of meal-related, rhythmic and homeostatic mechanisms and the generation of thirst and drinking BJMBR
One of the primary goals of the study of thirst is to understand why drinking occurs under ad libitum or natural conditions. An appreciation of the experimental strategies applied by physiologists studying thirst from different perspectives can facilitate progress toward understanding the natural history of drinking behavior. Drinking research carried out using three separate perspectives - homeostatic, circadian rhythms, and food-associated - generates types of information about the mechanisms underlying drinking behavior. By combining research strategies and methods derived from each of these approaches, it has been possible to gain new information that increases our appreciation of the interactions between homeostatic mechanisms and circadian rhythms in...

Wheel-running and rest activity pattern interaction in two octodontids (Octodon degus, Octodon bridgesi) Biol. Res.
OCAMPO-GARCÉS,ADRIÁN; HERNÁNDEZ,FELIPE; MENA,WILSON; PALACIOS,ADRIÁN G.
Wheel-running and other non-photic stimuli influence the rest-activity pattern of diurnal and nocturnal mammals. A day to night inversion of phase preference of activity was described among Octodon degus, when exposed to ad-libitum wheel running. We have studied the rest-activity pattern response in presence of ad libitum wheel-running in wild-captured male individuals from two species of genus Octodon: O. degus (n=9, crepuscular-diurnal) and O. bridgesi (n=3, nocturnal). After two months of habituation to laboratory conditions, recordings were performed in isolation chambers under a 12:12 light-dark schedule with or without access to a running wheel. Actograms were constructed from data obtained by an automated acquisition system. O. bridgesi were also...
